Rescued Lousianna Birds Released on Sanibel Island

An exciting day on Sanibel today! U.S. Fish and Wildlife officers released 21 Brown Pelicans and 11 Gannets into the clean Gulf waters at Algiers Beach (Gulfside City Park).

The birds begain their journey aboard a special Coast Guard flight that left New Orleans at 7am, landing at Page Field. The crates were loaded into waiting vans to head to Sanibel, where the birds were released. All of the birds had been rescued in the past 2 weeks, covered in oil from the BP blow-out. They were cleaned and nursed back to health in LA before being transported.

There is a possibility that more birds may be brought to the area to be released in the future.
